composed of members buckshot, 5ft, and dj evil dee, black moon simultaneously kicked off and defined the rap renaissance of new york with the release of enta da stage in 1993. whereas plenty of earlier groups had spit rage-filled rhymes to tear down the world’s unjust establishments, no one had evoked brooding pathos or introspective anger quite like black moon. underground hip-hop might have been dominated by the sunny sound of g-funk when enta da stage dropped, but from then on the scene turned to the dark side. black moon was rising.

landing as gene tellem s first record, -who says no- is a product of change. new relationships and collaborations emerged out of a time when familiar spaces in montreal were disappearing. this state of ambiguity, and improvisation inspired the freeform structures and subtle transformations heard in these tracks. while -moving in this way- and the title tune push forward with intention, -soul of man- floats between lush drones, a pitch bent lead, and a pair of haunting chords. -we were all being tested in different ways, and trying to figure out what would happen next...-

you probably don t know this disco banger, i think there is about 4 or 5 known copies on 7inch, everyone who has a copy has been keeping it quiet. i first heard it from david haffner about 4 years ago and had been after it since then. after a lot of research i came to the conclusion the everyone involved had passed away, but months after giving up after i spotted benitas full name on another related lp credited as a backing singer. i was then able to track down benita who was alive, well and surprised and very happy to hear from me. this one is a beast and will fly out (i find myself saying this far to often).

last year’s on the corner underground smash release, the 12” ep santuri’s embaire umeme, introduced uganda’s mugwisa international xylophone group (m.i.x.g) to the world. the recordings center on the embaire, a giant xylophone native to ugandan folk music, which is dug into a pit for a natural, earthy bass resonance as gargantuous as the instrument itself. the instrument performs a key role in village life, with ceremonial playing sessions lasting for hours on end. these recordings may be esoteric in nature but they add important context to the santuri’s embaire umeme 12” and are a vital documentation of the iganga village’s culture, as well as that of uganda. jones has artfully chopped the epic session into a series of short evocative chapters to create a pioneering masterpiece. remix duties are led by griot house innovators, the diabolcal liberties, who have raved-up some sun ra frequencies for the cosmic junglist crew. last but never least, victoria topping has created beautiful artwork using the session photography taken by jones during the recordings

amongst hip-hop fans, boogie down productions first two albums criminal minded (1987) and by all means necessary (1988) both loom very large. and for good reason: they both captured one of the late 1980s most important and influential crews at their highest powers of lyricism and musical invention. that being said, too many people sleep on bdps third lp, ghetto music. released in 1989, when the hip-hop world was truly beginning to explode and reach new heights of sales and exposure around the world, the album is arguably as powerful as the groups first two. as on by all means necessary, in the wake of the tragic death of original founder, producer and dj scott larock, krs-one pushed along mightily on the production side, with help from his extended crew. musically the sound created on albums 2 & 3 was funky, catchy, and continually innovative, giving him the perfect backdrop to build his edutainment syllabus. lyrically there was never a question about krsã power, and on ghetto music he continues to impress, teach and ask important questions. clear cases in point are two of the albumãs singles, you must learn and why is that? but he gets even deeper on lesser-jocked tracks like the anti-police thought-piece who protects us from you (still sadly relevant in 2017), ghetto music and world peace. still as strong and entertaining today as it was almost three decades ago, this new reissue is a perfect way for younger fans to embrace one of the most underrated hip-hop platters of the era.

london minimal techno label trapped ldn turn their attention to new talent rhys samson, who gets freaky from the get go with the snaking beats and threads of psychoactive melodies and found sounds that make up the snappily titled -paramedic to the dancefloor-. cosmjn delivers a very different kind of remix of the original that has a more discoid flavour to it, although it maintains the late night trippiness that trapped prefer overall. -religious clowns- is a deeper jam that seeks to soothe, albeit with plentiful rippling details still coursing through its veins, which alan castro capitalizes on with a remix that gets even more intricate and strange.

the selecter, the riotous skank machine who exploded out of coventry in the game-changing, multi-cultural 2 tone explosion of 1979 release their brand new album ‘daylight’ on october 6th. now reunited around the nucleus of original members pauline black and arthur ‘gaps’ hendrickson, the selecter are firing on all righteous cylinders in 2017 and ‘daylight’ is their most urgent, politically engaged and purely uplifting music since the days of ‘too much pressure’ and ‘celebrate the bullet’.

transitive elements’ most wanted tracks are finally available in a double vinyl release for the first time. all tracks have been remastered from enrico mantini’s original 90s dat tapes to make them sound even better of the original umm presses! a must have for collectors and for those who missed the original releases.

a complex web – the story of dive position and the shining path ... began in 1982 when peter miller (aka dr. william s ray – vocals, tapes, guitar) met andrew millar (aka maurice spectograph the nose-y pieman – program execution) in gold coast, australia. while sharing a similar taste in music, they decided to form a band, so dive position was born. equipped with a korg synthesiser and tascam 4-track recorder, they -wanted to have the sound of kraftwerk, the groove of can, and the menace of throbbing gristle-, ending up with -a cross of suicide and the residents-, as peter recalls. in a local record shop they met stig andre leonardson (aka vincent blackshadow), who joined the duo on percussion and drum machine programming. their motto was -now is then-. dive position then became the fatal charm around 1984, and the fatal charm became the shining path who eventually released their only album -basic training manual- in an edition of only 250 copies, most probably in 1986. the band then started to drift apart, and shortly after andrew sadly passed away – this compilation -now is then- comprised of previously unreleased dive position and the shining path material is dedicated to his memory.

the seventh ep from the untold stories, is a collaborative project, beats and keys. the beats coming from nektar agu, and the piano from matias zurita, aka cossmos. both artists from buenos aires, and they obviously found a great harmony for this project, because the result is very nice indeed. a1 is a special work, entitled seiya . it s an enlivening track of distinct attitude, the flow is strong, the percussion powerful, and combined dextrously with the beautiful keys from cossmos. the effect is very inspiring, very mental - deep and evocative, and very enjoyable. this epic work then get s a remix by archipel label boss pheek, who keeps all that made the original magical, and crafts a refined 8 min remix, if you liked the first track then this will be a very awesome further development. the ep is then concluded by a 7 min work by nektar agu and cosmos, this time a more upbeat and trippy affair, again it s beats and keys in a cool harmony, again done with considerable skill, and is a nice end to a fine record.

repress , swedish disco aficionado drop out orchestra has been plying his trade in the world of slick edits and on-point party fodder for the best part of ten years now, and now he comes to riot gear with a sure fire club classic to share. there s no prizes for guessing the source material on -holding on-, but in this context the evergreen crossover jam gets a modern steroid injection, having never sounded more contemporary than here. yam who? sidles in for a remix that does a subtle job, simmering down some of the familiar vocals and making a slinkier cut that still hits hard. -knucklehead- brings a little more jacking drum machine action to the table, but still disco is the main order of the day, while -where is my man- takes the prize with its on point jazz funk licks and stomping beat.

first time band anthology - includes 9 unreleased tracks! this fall, the independent literary press all night menu will publish sam sweets hadley lee lightcap, a nonfiction novel that traces the backstories of the three members in acetone, a band that played in los angeles for nine years. though few heard them, their recordings are time capsules of who they were, how they lived, and where they came from. light in the attic has partnered with all night menu to present acetone 1992-2001, the first anthology of the trios music. the book and the album will be released at the same time.

j. f. burma is a new analog synth project of jeremy berman, a longtime friend of the bunker who we met via the forums of i-f’s cybernetic broadcasting system internet radio station in the early 2000’s. while living in brooklyn, jeremy spent many hours each week searching for undiscovered gems among the piles of records (and sometimes rat skeletons) at notorious greenpoint crate-digging spot the thing. inspired and educated by the music he was finding, he purchased his first modular and started building synthesizers and modules in spite of his lack of training in electrical engineering. currently, about half of his current eurorack rig has been diy’ed via trial and error.

at the third new interplanetary melodies astral journey stopover, it was mandatory to catch an italian project deeply inspired by the sun ra visionary realm, expressing contemporary trials of hybridising jazz with artful electronica. so ra toth and the brigantes orchestra landed on vinyl grooves for the label, after having previously appeared on the likes of mathematics and berceuse heroique. behind the sound, we find the elusive and unpredictable genius of the well-respected producer marcello napoletano.
nim received the distorted sound signal from napoletano taken over by the egyptian deity born from the lips of ra. who knows if those noises were coming from a parallel dimension, outer space, or some otherworldly sphere...? submerged in dark bottom waters, the stormy waves of the acid sea are made of convulsive afro-flavoured percussion with sharp synths looming out like the ivories of some freakish abyssal creatures.

for the first release feelings have enlisted iranian born, london-based producer kasra v, delivering an incredible slice of middle-eastern inspired house. on the a side is the early 90s inspired fantasy, a dance floor thumper with a tribal house feel you could imagine rolling out the speakers at a dreamscape party, followed by the dreamy pris providing a contrasting sunrise vibe to the prior track. on the flip is myth a steady piano-led builder inspired and written in the style of southern iranian tribal music, followed by a remix of the same track from legendary nyc producer cozmo d under his dream 2 science alias bringing a straighter dancefloor ready versioin with the heavy deep house flavours his d2s project is lauded for.

in the midst of the storm brings together two exceptional talents and two generations of reggae musicians. jah9s previous release 9 was critically heralded as one of the most re-freshing reggae albums of 2016. and now, fans will get the fully de-constructed, dubwise version of the album with nine newly recorded dub sessions from the legendary dub master, mad professor. he s renown for hundreds of productions with the who s who of jamaican veteran artist like i.e. lee perry, u-roy, the congos, horace andy, and did also great dub re-mixes for massive attack, sade, depeche mode, grace jones and many more. this release marks the first mad professor title with vp records as well as the first commercial recording of mad professor and jah9 together. the press and media coverage will include interviews with mad professor and jah9. the great original cover illustration is by artist richard nattoo!

austin ato is the latest project from colin bailey, the multi talented producer from oban in scotland who has been the man behind the drums of death moniker since 2008, and has also recorded under the frankie dreams and coba aliases. with forthcoming material also due on phonica white, ato lands on futureboogie with the massive feel good vibes of music will save the day, backed with two superb remixes from auntie flo and christophe. featured here are two original mixes of music will save the day. the dub mix the is classic house music jam, packed full of energizing musical flourishes, from the balearic tinges of the sequenced mallet riff, whimsical pads and booming bassline to the searing crowd chant and the joyous piano motif. ato displays some serious musical chops here, which are further enhanced on the vocal mix with the addition of a bi-lingual vocal hook that will surely act as a call to arms on any discerning dancefloor. on the auntie flos hidden garden remix, the huntleys & palmers mainstay strips things right back for a beatless excursion, letting the percussive elements drive the forward motion whilst the melodies and thick synth pads wash over like crashing waves, a great reinterpretation by brian dsouza aka auntie flo. futureboogies very own christophe provides the second remix, tweaking an acid riff over a heavy, old school drumbeat and teasing in the musical elements, providing a tougher and more jackin take on the original mix, whilst keeping faithful to the original vibe.
